About the Item
A World's End by Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren "Witches" dress, Fall-Winter 1983. This rare and important dress features experimental construction that creates an incomparably unique silhouette. This can be seen in the batwing sleeves that are tucked into the pit of the arm producing pointed elbows. In addition to this, a draped inset is attached to the front of the garment creating asymmetrical volume. Made of white cotton towelling fabric, it features a square neckline and wooden toggles to cinch the waist.
This collection, largely influenced by Keith Haring's drawings, was the last collaboration between McLaren and Westwood. Towelling fabric was only used in limited quantities making this garment even more rare than its houndstooth counterpart. Vivienne Westwood, in what is one of her most famous portraits, is shown wearing this dress with a vibrant red scarf tied around her waist.
