Ceil Chapman Navy Chiffon Portrait Collar Dress with Shoulder Bow - Med, 1950s

About the Item

One look at this dress’s multidirectional bodice draping and it’s easy to see why seven of Chapman’s designs are featured in the Met’s permanent collection; the 35 feet of skirt justify comparisons to Christian Dior. The kind of dress that should only be worn dancing under a full moon to Glenn Miller. Tea length chiffon evening dress with off-shoulder portrait collar neckline and cap sleeves; 12” oversized bow on neckline at left shoulder. Bodice features multidirectional diagonal draping that continues on to sleeves; flexible boning front and back. V-shaped waistline front and back and cascading swirl skirt with rolled hemline. Metal side zipper closure with single hook and eye at top, plus single snap at left underarm; hanging loops.
