Madeleine Cheruit was perhaps the first celebrity-fronted fashion house. A stylish great beauty, she parlayed her gifts into one of the most esteemed Parisian couture houses. Under her watchful and developed eye for talent (she is credited with being the first couturier to purchase the designs of Poiret, thus giving him his entrée), Cheruit built a business consistently praised along with contemporaries including Lanvin, Vionnet, Worth, and Chanel.
From the house of Cheruit comes this pre- First War silk tunic, reflecting the penchant for exotic art from the Middle and Far East. A weighted asymmetric front closure adds additional interest to a seemingly simple design: abundant embroidery in gold and silver metal thread in the tiniest of hand stitches, minute sequins, rhinestones, and extraordinarily shaped glass beads of which the likes may never be seen again. Fastens with concealed snaps and hooks and eyes, with snaps at the slim sleeve cuffs. Fully lined. Silk surface has some areas of abrasion from friction with the beads and stitching at sleeve underside and bodice side.
Measurements: Length at back 29", chest 41", outer sleeve 22"
