About the Item

Offered a rare and very special teens-20's Fortuny velvet wall hanging from the Shakenhurst estate. This panel was designed specifically as a wall hanging or bed cover and is not yardage, but lined and signed. I have never seen one of these on the market, ever. The label in the corner indicates that this was designed to be a "piece", not yardage. I think that it relates to Monet's Water Lilly paintinngs and that it was made about the same time by a recognized legacy artist. A one-of-a-kind work of art. Teens-1920's pomegranate revival copying 15th century Venetian Pomegranate motif.... connected to earlier medieval Turkish pattern. An important classic ... in blue green painterly quality a la Monet's water lilies ..(perhaps done at the same time)? The images float in the background ...not a straight color but rather quite painterly ... a la water rippling and changing color. The panel measures 50"W x 93"L (4.2' W x 7 3/4' L) and is in excellent condition. Full documentation included with purchase. Photos include Shakenhurst Estate and the cover of the Sunday Times magazine section dated July 1978 showing the Fortuny panel. PROVENANCE: PROPERTY OF THE LATE AMANDA CAROLINE SEVERNE OF SHAKENHURST Amanda Severne's direct ancestors, the Meyseys, were granted the estate known as Shakenhurst outright by Edward III in 1349 for services rendered overseas. They had held the estate as vassals of the crown long before that and the Meyseys, a Norman family who fought at Hastings, were first recorded in Worcestershire as early as 1110. In 1906 the estate was left away from the family but in 1961 Shakenhurst, the surviving contents and the sadly denuded estate passed back to Michael Meysey Wigley Severne, the great-great-great grandson of Anna Maria and Edmund Meysey Wigley who had rebuilt the Hall in the 1790s. Michael Severne married Rachel Fitzgerald, daughter of the 28th Knight of Glin and a renowned model in the 1950s. Together they restored the mansion, estate and gardens. The Meysey-Wigley Severne occupation of Shakenhurst that stretches back over three-quarters of a millennium came to an end following the tragic and untimely death of their only child Amanda, some 55 weeks after her father. According to real estate agents, Balfours and Savills, Shakenhurst, a Georgian-style home, is one of the most exclusive addresses in the West Midlands. It has thirteen bedrooms, seven bathrooms and is set in 1,300 acres of rolling countryside. Full documentation available to serious buyers upon request.
