19th Century Japanese Usu Mochi Mortar Carved from a Cedar Log

About the Item

19th Century Japanese Usu mortar, carved from a solid cedar log and banded with woven bamboo around its circumference. These were used the make mochi from rice using a Kine which is a type of pestle. These were normally found in temples or homes of the wealthy and the mochi was made for special occasions of celebration. Rich dark color to the wood with patina from use and age. In todays world they are used as indoor planters or with a top as a side table, but they are also an interesting object in the interior on its own merits.
