Ancient Persia 12th Century Islamic Bronze Seljuk Bird Pomander Statue Sculpture
About the Item
A fine and rare, ancient Islamic Seljuk period bronze bird statue, pomander, circa 1150, possibly Persia or Central Asia.
The bird is finely modeled and is engraved and has pierced work, such figures were used as pomanders or air freshners and were filled with fragrant or perfumed flower petals.
The bird is freestanding but is also mounted to a lacquered block stand, well patinated and in very good condition.
Provenance; From a gentleman collector prestigious Kuwaiti collection.

Each statue is hand carved as a male Hindu four armed temple guard, the guards holding a mace (Gada) and one hand on a dagger (Katar), another hand holding a lotus flower to represent spiritual enlightenment.
