Kadjar Lacquered Paper Mache Box

About the Item

Beautiful lacquered paper mache box decorated with imaginary animals (that look like cats) and plant motifs. The box seems to take the shape of a vegetable or cucurbit / gourd. The paper mache (or boiled cardboard) is painted black (with dark blue highlights) and the patterns are engraved and enhanced with paint (gold, green, white). Iran, Kadjar Art, circa 1900.
