Sculpted Terracotta Gandhara Head

About the Item

A lifesize terracotta head in Gandhara style. Based on the style, it is likely from Kushan period Northern India, circa 4th-6th century. The expressive facial composition with stylized tightly curled hair and upturned moustaches were clearly influenced by the Hellenistic and Greco-Roman styles from its forebearers. It is in an excellent antique and stable condition, although area of losses could be seen on the back of the head, which appears to be where the head was attached to a wall previously. Due to the terracotta construction, there are tiny dust coming out of the mounting pole when being moved. Total height is 17inches, 12 inches head only.
