Chinese Antique porcelain ginger jar, South-East Asia, Guangxu 1900

About the Item

Chinese porcelain ginger jar with floral decorations in bright and vibrant colours, made for the South-East Asian market. Made around 1900. Dimensions: 25 x 22 x 22 cm. Overall in good condition, some minor damage to the glaze and some minor frittings to the unglazed parts of the lid. Possibly Peranakan or Straits Chinese ware (also called Nyonya ware). The Peranakans are an ethnic group defined by their genealogical descent from the first waves of Southern Chinese settlers to the ports in the Malay Peninsula and Indonesian Archipelago. Peranakan culture, especially in the dominant Peranakan centres of Malacca, Singapore, Penang and Medan is characterized by its unique hybridization of ancient Chinese culture with the local cultures of the Nusantara region, the result of a centuries-long history of transculturation and interracial marriage (source wikipedia). This type of porcelain was produced exclusively for wealthy Chinese communities along the Strait of Malacca in the 19th and early 20th centuries, Peranakan Chinese porcelain is enjoying a resurgence of interest among collectors. Straits-born Chinese, or Peranakans, in Penang, Malacca and Singapore, used these ornate and colourful wares on festive occasions such as weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and Chinese New Year
