Chinese Peachbloom-Glazed Beehive Water Pot, Taibai Zun, Guangxu Mark

About the Item

An elegant and beautiful Chinese peachbloom-glazed beehive shaped scholar's water pot, taibai zun, Gaungxu six character mark in underglaze blue, and possibly of the period (1875 to 1908), late Qing dynasty, China. The water pot of Classic beehive form, well potted with a wide domed body rising to a short, narrow neck and flared mouth. The body covered in a luscious peachbloom glaze of crushed strawberry, with a large area of suffused pale pink speckled with green, calling to mind the skin of a ripening peach, hence the name. The pink streaking downwards, giving way to the darker crushed strawberry as the glaze pools towards the bottom, stopping short of the foot except for three large drips that stop right at the foot rim. The recessed base glazed white with a six character "Da Qing Guangxu Nian Zhi" mark in underglaze blue. An attractive network of crackle just under the surface of the glaze. Made for the scholar's desk, usually as part of a set, the beehive water pot form and the peachbloom glaze were popularized under the Kangxi Emperor (1672 to 1722). The popularity of the form and glaze continued throughout the Qing dynasty.
