Japanese Kutani Pheasant Sculpture, Okimono, Showa Era, Early 20th Century

About the Item

A spectacularly glazed Japanese Kutani model, okimono, of a pheasant, Showa era, early 20th century, Japan. The okimono, or decorative sculpture, in the form of a magnificent pheasant portrayed in a recumbent position, head up and alert, wings folded against its body, its long tail extended straight out behind. The pheasant crafted of porcelain, and glazed in a bold and bright shades of green, blue, red, yellow and aubergine, a five color palette known as Iroe Kutani. The plump body, underside of the neck, and beak glazed a warm mustard yellow. Most of the wings and neck glazed aubergine, with the wing tips in alternate bands of green and blue. The long tail also glazed a rich green. The face glazed red, with the crest glazed a deep blue. The underside with an impressed seal and signature of the artist.
