Ming Dynasty Vase with Vibrant Turquoise Glaze

About the Item

Ming Dynasty (16th century) pottery vase with vivid turquoise glaze, decorated with dragons. The vase is partially moulded, with circular bosses around the mouth rim and a hexagonal base decorated with relief flowers. The vase has two handles that are decorated with masks on their shoulders. The primary decor is of two golden dragons chasing each other around the body of the vase. The dragons' teeth, eyebrows, claws, and scales are all in relief, lending them texture and vitality -- you can almost feel them whirling through the air. The golden glaze from the dragons has dripped down in parts, lending the piece a surprisingly modern look for a 500-year-old antique. Altogether, this is a piece full of personality.
