Small Japanese Satsuma Incense Burner, Koro, Meiji Period, Late 19th Century

About the Item

A fine Japanese Satsuma stoneware incense burner, koro, Meiji Period, late 19th century, Japan. The koro of square shape with curved sides, supported by four shaped and splayed legs. The koro is topped by a pierced cover featuring a shishi or buddhistic lion finial. A pair of handles formed as uchide no kozuchi graces the shoulders of the koro. Uchide no kozuchi, the legendary magical hammer of Daikoku-ten, is often referred to as the "wish granting hammer". It is said to be able to grant the user any desire simply by striking with it. The curved sides of the body of the censer finely painted in raised enamel and gilt, with images of rakan, court ladies, and boys. Rakan, or arhats, are disciples of the Buddha, said to possess higher levels of understanding, and oftentimes, supernatural powers. The halo behind their heads indicate their status. Chrysanthemum blossoms and lotus petals decorated the background of the koro. The underside with a six character "Dai Nippon Satsuma Yaki" mark written in gilt on a red ground. The Shimazu family crest above.
