19th Century Puerto Rican "Isabelino" Style Mahogany Dresser/Armoire

About the Item

Dresser/Armoire from the Puerto Rican cabinetmaker Rafael Margarida who established his workshop in Old San Juan since 1892. The pediment has two inverted arcs that join to end in a crown. The center of the pediment is adorned with a carving cartouche shield surrounded with acanthus leaves and top with a fleur-de-lis. Both ends of the pediments are adorned with urn finials. The armoire have two doors shaped with gothic bevelled mirrors. At each side of the doors there are turned columns. At the bottom there is a long drawer with two batwing backplate handles. Once you open the armoire with an old key, you find three shelves or sufficient space for storage. The armoire is supported by two flattened bun feet in the front and two block bracket in the back. On the 1800's, this armoire used to be called Grandma's Chest since it could be easily dismantled and taken anywhere on board the ship the family went, usually Spain. Then at the destination it would be mounted again by the service in order to hang her clothes and personal items.
