Pair of Chinese Yokeback Children's Chairs, c. 1850
About the Item
These low children's chairs from northern China are designed in a traditional style known as a "yoke-back chair," defined by its tall back, flat back yoke, and protruding top crest rail. The style is also known as a "lamphanger chair" for its resemblance to bamboo wall lamps, or an "official's hat chair," after the wide-brimmed putou hats worn by early government officials. Dated to the mid-19th century, this pair is elegantly designed with minimal decoration, accented only by the curve of the top crest rails and the simple floral motif carved into the front aprons. Once coated by a dark lacquer finish, the chairs now have deeply patinated surfaces that reveal a century of loving use.
