Four Chinese Carved, Lacquered and Gilded Panels

About the Item

These elaborate and deeply carved panels are mid-20th century. The carving is very detailed and on a rather deep heavy wooden panel. All the raised areas are richly detailed and gilded while the background is lacquered a bright Chinese red. This is them framed in a further lacquered mounting that has a gilded inner edge all further framed in beautiful Asian mahogany frames with a deep rich color and patterning to the wood. All the panels denote lush foliage and trees set in a mountainous terrain with exotic and spectacular pavilions and elaborate halls. The four make an overwhelming statement as a grouping. The gold is in remarkable condition as is the carving in general with some very minor chipping and rub thru to the gold. One panel has a crack in it but it is together and intact with only a very minor separation. A perceptible amount of accretion from dust has settled down into the deep surfaces which is difficult to remove and really only add to the overall effect expected from use and age.
