Japanese 'double gourd' lacquer suzuri’bako (writing box) by Hara Yôyûsai 原羊遊斎

About the Item

An uniquely double-gourd-shaped lacquer suzuri’bako (writing box) with a design of gourd leaves, by Hara Yôyûsai (1769-1845). Covered with amber coloured lacquer and decorated in gold, orange and brown takamaki-e 高蒔絵 with gourd leaves and a waning gibbous moon in takazôgan. The interior and inside of the cover are decorated in gold and silver takamaki-e and hirame with ‘maiden-flowers’ (ominaeshi). The inside of the lid signed 'Yôyûsai'. The interior of the box is fitted with a rectangular bronze water dropper (suiteki) cast with a flying crane in relief, a nicely-shaped inkstone (suzuri), and brush rests. Hara Yōyūsai, a renowned Edo artist, was the official lacquerer for the Doi clan of the Koga domain. He produced lacquers in the Rinpa style, which originated from Hon'ami Kōetsu and was further developed by Ogata Kōrin. When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
