Japanese Gilt Black Lacquer Tea Chest, c. 1850
About the Item
With intricate construction and exquisite decoration, this fine tabletop tea chest is a true masterpiece of Japanese cabinetry and lacquerware. Decorated in gilt with cartouches enclosing birds and maple branches, the mid-section doors enclose multiple drawers originally used to house wares for tea ceremony. These interior drawers are decorated with falling maple leaves and a sprinkled maki-e pattern on muted red lacquer. The upper and lower sections are delicately painted with petite porcelains, tea wares, and offering fruits, and accented by intricate brass hardware throughout. Dated to the late-19th century, the chest is a beautiful example of Meiji period craftsmanship and remains in excellent condition.
From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.
