Large Chinese Export Round Black Lacquer Gilt Painted Box, Mid 20th Century
About the Item
A very large Chinese round black lacquer and gilt painted box, made for the export market, mid 20th century, China.
The round black lacquer box of impressive proportions, and decorated with beautiful gilt painting. The top of the box features a lovely shanshui style landscape painting with a pair of young boys playing with a kite in the foreground. A dramatic mountainous landscape rises from the water in the background. The landscape studded with trees and vegetation, and even a small pagoda.
The sides of the box features four large quatrefoil cartouches. Two cartouches decorated with powerful dragons writhing amongst the clouds, the flaming pearl of wisdom before them. The other two with more shanshui style landscapes.
The interior of the box painted plain black.
