Captivating Japanese Bronze Goose Jardiniere by Seiya

About the Item

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this most captivating large Meiji Period 1868-1912 bronze plant holder/ jardiniere, cast at the foundry of the highly respected Genryusai Seiya, on this occasion the artist has used his skillful eye to design a functional plant pot holder in the form of a gaggle of geese, the geese captured standing in a circle in varying poses to form the receptacle, with the heavy cast bowl supported by a multitude of the geese’s feet, the faces of the geese are particularly charming in the way that they have been captured in varying heights, poses and facial expressions, their eyes picked out in gold is another feature of the quality of this particular piece, fully artist signed to the underside. There is little doubt that a very functional yet amusing item such as this crosses boundaries and appeals to a much wider audience than just Japanese art collectors, it would sit well in any room setting and would continually brighten up your day with its captivating humorous charm, exactly as the artist intended over 120 years ago. Literature : Genryusai Seiya was a highly respected artist producing all manner of bronze okimono and objects towards the late 19th century, his specialist subject was without doubt animal subject bronzes and he is likely to have been heavily influenced by the opening of the Tokyo Zoo in 1882, his foundry was responsible for a large and varied output and seemingly employed many skilled metalworkers, occasionally we see pieces that are multi signed, usually large and important sculptures likely destined for overseas exhibition, as in the instance of our monumental Elephant group by Morimitsu that featured in our first exhibition catalogue, although the majority of wares destined for export carried just the Seiya foundry seal or carved signature .
