Chinese Lao Tian Li Cloisonne Cylindrical Box, Late Qing Dynasty, China

About the Item

A delightful antique Chinese cloisonné cylindrical box and cover by Lao Tian Li, late Qing Dynasty, circa 1900, China. The box of cylindrical form and worked all over in cloisonné enamels of primarily red, blue, green, white and yellow, all within copper and brass wire enclosures. The body decorated with a design of flowering branches of peony rising from rocky outcrops against a red cloisonné ground with a wire "wan" diaper pattern. The bottom register with a band of stylized lotus petals. The top register with a band of ruyi heads. The flowering peony branch design is repeated on the cover, with the same type of red cloisonné ground with wire "wan" diaper pattern. A geometric patterned band with a stylized coin or flower motif surrounds the cover. The interior and underside of the box enameled a bright blue. The interior mouth rim with an inscribed "Lao Tian Li Zhi". Lao Tian Li was a renowned cloisonné studio operating in Beijing in the late 19th through early 20th century. They were know for their high quality works.

    Wear consistent with age and use. Minor fading. Minor pitting to the cloisonné, as expected with age. Some discoloration to the metal of the interior rim near the inscription.

    This is a very decorative Chinese cloisonné lidded box which we date to the mid 20th century. The box has a cylindrical shape, with its original lid and is all beautifully made with colored enamels set into a black ground. The main decoration to the body shows two 4-toed dragons chasing a flaming pearl. The lid shows another dragon set amongst clouds. The dragons have a gold colouring and other colours are used to give the detailed scene including red, green, blues, yellow and white. The lid also has lappet border patterns in blue to its edges.
