Japanese Meiji Bronze Basketweave Pattern Sake Pot

About the Item

An exceptional quality Japanese Meiji bronze sake pot decorated with a basket weave patterning dating between 1868 and 1912 and probably made around 1890. The pot is elegantly shaped and could immediately be envisaged sitting on a scholar’s desk and is very finely made of square form with slightly bellowing rounded sides standing on a flat base and with a recess and fitted cover to the top. A short shaped pouring spout sits below a swing handle attached to raised elements on either side. The sake pot has a wonderful richly aged patina and is signed to the underside of the cover. Provenance: acquired in the British Art Market. In very good condition with only light age wear to the base.
