Pair of Chinese Bronze Ho Ho Boy Candle Stands, C. 1900

About the Item

These early 20th century candlesticks are cast of bronze in the form of two young boys dressed in flowing garments and standing on square pedestal bases. Each boy holds a dish for taper candles overhead, tucked within a cluster of lotus leaves, blossoms, and seed pods. This common combination of motifs conveys a blessing for continuous success. Likely designed for a Western market or an example of European chinoiserie, the bronze candle stands charm with sculptural form and a beautifully aged dark patina. From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.
