Very large pair of cloisonné vases, Japan 19th century

About the Item

Rare and very large pair ( 0,92m high) of cloisonné vases , Japan, 19th c. The "shippô-yaki" technique was introduced to Japan, via China, around the 17th c. It was jealously guarded and its use was limited to decorative accessories, until it fell into oblivion, before being rediscovered in the mid-19th c. thanks to the reopening of Japan during the Meiji era (1868-1912) and the end of copper prohibition in the archipelago. Good condition, except for some wear on the foot and a deformation on the neck of one of them. Two small inner containers fit inside the neck, in copper. Very nice decorative aspect.
