China Trade set of six Gouache Still Life Paintings of Fruit & Flowers on Pith Paper, Each Signed Sunqua, mid-19th century The fine China Trade pith paper painting in Gouache depict different fruit and flower compositions. The painting is extremely well done and executed by Sunqua. Each painting has a signature with his name painted on a leaf. The pith paper paintings are mounted with an ivory silk matte with a green line surrounding the painting within a gilt frame. All glass is Tru Vue conservation glass. Dimensions: Frame 10 3/4 inches x 14 3/4 inches x 3/4 inches; sight 7 1/2 inches high x 11 inches wide. Sunqua (active 1830-1870) was a Chinese painter during the Qing dynasty. He was one of the best-known Chinese artists in the 19th century producing pictures for the European market. Residing in China Street in the city of Canton (Guangzhou). Sunqua worked and established studios in Canton and Macao, and was known for his large oil pictures of the shipping and trade into these ports. His studio also concentrated on flower and trade albums, most of which are in full body color painted on pith paper.

  • Condition:
    Wear consistent with age and use. Excellent condition with bright colors. Pith paper is very fragile when in the original album and can sustain damage. These have very minimal small areas where the paper has been pressed and a couple of small tears which are not in the painting.
