Chinese Folk Drawing of Mythical Qilin, c. 1900

About the Item

Beautifully detailed and masterfully painted, this painting dating from the turn of the 20th century centers its expressive composition upon a rondel of Chinese symbols. Representing prosperity, a pair of exuberant children cavorts in a fantastical landscape. One rides a sensitively portrayed qilin, a mythological lion-like dragon who represents joy and benevolence, the other child waves a banner inscribed with the message “Good luck for your future.” Painted on muslin, the work is presented in a stunning green-tinted Elmwood frame.
