Japanese Six Panel Screen Battle of Uji Bridge
About the Item
The first battle at Uji was in 1180 and was the beginning of the Heike Wars.
This screen depicts a famous scene from the Heike Wars. Two Heike generals, Sasaki Takatsuna and Kajiwara Kagesue, on their horses, fording the Uji river in pursuit of the Genji. The Genji troops had already crossed the bridge and then destroyed it as a means to prevent the Heike troops from advancing. Takatsuna and Kagesue then raced each other to be the first to cross the river to reach the enemy.
