About the Item
Japanese Two Panel Screen: Mountain Landscape with Calligraphy. Late Edo (c. 1850) painting of a dramatic mountainside carved by a waterfall with a crane flying in the foreground and beautifully executed calligraphy. Calligraphy is writing about a day in October, reflecting on the essence of nature. Signature and seal read: Kozetsu, the alias for Tanomura Chokunyu (1814 - 1907), considered the last member of the literati school in Japanese painting. The literati were intellectuals who were learned in calligraphy, painting, and poetry and specialized in traditional Chinese style of painting. Ink and minimal pigments on paper with a silk brocade border.
