Large Contemporary Japanese Red Blue Yellow Silk Two Panel Folding Screen

About the Item

Mesmerizing Japanese contemporary two panel "byobu" or folding screen featuring Genryoku style handcrafted raised exquisite pure silk kimono in blue, red, brown and yellow and gray against a black background. A jakago (gabion) was an oval-shaped round woven bamboo basket crammed full of cobblestones and used in river revetment construction to prevent soil runoff or to control the water flow. The individual baskets do not at all resemble snakes, but when a number of them are lined up along a riverbank, the sight indeed conjures up the impression of a recumbent big snake. This padded silk garment has a bold and unusual depiction, in horizontal stripes, of a scene of river revetment construction done in the yuzen dyeing technique. Deformed jakago baskets are in evidence, along with things such as fence and stakes. Tagasode is the way a genryoku kosode kimono is hung over a kimono rack. The kosode is considered the origin of modern kimono. The Genryoku style of kosode that became popular at the end of Meiji era is also referred to as Genroku kosode. It emulated Genroku type designs in its use of surihaku (a dying technique involving foil applique). Designs with an impressive robustness were appreciated in this kosode and tie-dying and embroidery were techniques often used. This period also saw the perfecting of the yuzen technique dying, which became the medium for the expression of free and delicate patterns and can not be ignored when discussing present day kimonos. According to the designer of this series, tagasode originated from the desire of ladies of the court to preserve their exquisite kimonos, and thus kimono designs showcasing the Four Seasons in Japan, its history and its customs have been passed down all the way to the present generation. This byobu series conveys the beauty and sensibility that the history of Japan reflects and at the same time enhances contemporary living spaces. Dimensions: H 60 in x W 57 in x D 2.5 in.

Refined work by a painter from the first half of the 19th century, from the landscape of the "Rinpa" school by a painter from the end of the 18th century, the Rinpa school. Six panels painted in ink on gold leaf and "gofun" on vegetable paper. The flowers are made with the "gofun" technique, natural or pigmented white oyster powder. Rinpa is one of the major historical schools of Japanese painting. The style was consolidated by the brothers Ogata Korin (1658–1716) and Ogata Kenzan (1663–1743). This folding screen has a very clean design that leaves plenty of room for the beautiful golden landscape. It comes flat and you can easily hang it with our hooks. Lucio Morini...
