About the Item

A set of eight Japanese Meiji era woodblock prints Japanese, Late 19th century Measures: Frames: small: height 50cm, width 37cm, depth 1.5cm - prints 35 x 24 Large: height 52cm, width 38cm, depth 1.5cm - prints 35 x 22 This remarkable and fantastic woodblock prints are a set of eight, dating from Meiji Era Japan. During this time Japan underwent substantial political, economic, and social change, and the country's artistic output and production similarly expanded and developed, with prints and visual arts in particular enjoying a real period of flourishing. In turn, works such as these had a significant impact on the development as Western art, as European artists adopted Japanese artists' unique style and use of colour and pattern. These excellent works include beautiful female portraits, images of women themselves painting, depictions of wrestling, and mythological scenes. They make a fascinating collection, demonstrative of the range, artistry, and skill of 19th century Japanese artistic production.
