Chinese Burled Hardwood Scholar Rock, Republic Period, 20th Century

About the Item

An unusual and striking Chinese scholar rock, gongshi, of polished and lacquered burled hardwood, set into a hardwood base, mid-20th century. The hardwood scholar "stone" meant to imitate dark lingbi limestone, with a fantastic shape featuring alluring perforations and hollows, mimicking a natural weather and water formed stone. The burl with a beautiful luster, featuring deep An inscription has been carved into the wood, apparently naming the stone "Xu Yun" (False Cloud) and signed RuanYuan. RuanYuan was a scholar official of the Qing Dynasty, though this stone is probably of a later date, making the inscription and signature apocryphal.
