Antique Original Thayo Burmese Burma Myanmar Asian Buddha Head Sculpture Statue

About the Item

An exceptionally beautiful, serene, delicately crafted, and extremely rare Burmese Buddha head/bust - hand-made using the ancient Thayo technique which entails using a lacquer paste made by mixing lacquer with wood ash, rice husk, bone powder, and sawdust and applying layers to mold and sculpt the Buddha figure by hand to achieve the desired thickness and ultimate result. The process can take months, sometimes years of layering the lacquer to achieve the desired outcome. This work has an amazing glow/patina and features a naturally inviting serene expression. This particular piece is quite scarce and rare due to its provenance. The Buddha was acquired in 1964 by an American family living in Burma - one of only a rare few foreign families allowed in the country. The father was a diplomat and was posted there from 1964-67 (at the time this was known as a "hardship" posting because few families wanted to stay there for three years). During this period only a handful of foreign or western outsiders were allowed into the country and virtually no artifacts were allowed out of the country by the then repressive military rule governing Burma at the time. As such, it is quite possible that this Buddha is one of the only authentically genuine Burmese Buddha figures remaining in existence today. We are listing it as late 19th/ early 20th century but could be older. A stunning and important work in our opinion. Would be a great addition to any Burmese/ Asian Buddha or artifacts collection or an eye-catching stand-alone accent work in about any setting once properly mounted and displayed. Dimensions: 14" High (with finial), 7" wide, 6" deep Head without finial: 9.25" high.
