Chinese Ming Dynasty Period Male Foo Dog Guardian Lion Hand-Carved Sculpture
About the Item
A Chinese Ming Dynasty period (1368 - 1644) hand-carved stone Foo Dog guardian lion sculpture depicting a male placing his paw atop a ball. Created in China during the Ming Dynasty which spanned from 1368 to 1644, this hand-carved stone sculpture depicts a Foo Dog guardian lion. The name foo dog is actually a mistake made in the west. In reality these imperial Chinese guardians are lions, which were believed to have powerful mythic, protective benefits and often sat outside government buildings and temples. Our sculpture depicts a male, recognizable at the fact that he is placing his right frontal paw on a sphere. A female guardian lion would have protected a cub. As is common with foo dogs, his mouth is open, exposing his teeth to the viewer. He is standing on a rectangular base with carved scalloped accents. With its striking depiction and good age, this Chinese Ming Dynasty period hand-carved guardian lion will make for a wonderful addition to any home!
