Early 19th Century Chinese Carved Agate Urn Set on a French Gilt Base

About the Item

This fine Chinese urn carving from the early 19th century has been in the late 19th century placed on a carved wood base that has been gilded creating a dramatic foil for the carving. Further enhancing the small carved urn an additional carving of a female figure has been used as a finial with a carved and gilded wood base set as a top to the urn creating a complete fusions of objects. The French are well known for this kind of work and stems from the late 17th and early 18th-century habit of mounting Chinese porcelains in gilded bronze. The carving is well done and very deeply carved and undercut creating a rich play of positive and negative space. Representing geese and lotus blossoms with flying butterfly's the whole enclosing the urn carved in the shape of a peach. The gilding shows some rub thru indicating age and use. The carvings top and bottom are married by the carved gilded and carved wood floral cage that holds the carved agate celestial female figure used as a finial.
