Japanese Antique Pair Buddhist Monju Fugen Bosatsu Nyorai Temple Shrine Buddhas

About the Item

Truly stunning pair of hand-carved wood Japanese buddha statues / sculptures that sit serenely atop their lotus petal thrones. The intricately carved details and wonderfully vivid coloring (especially on the flame-like halos) make this pair quite special. The Buddha on the left sits elevated on the elephant (to symbolize the great power of Buddhist practice in overcoming all obstacles) with hands clasped together in meditation is the Fugen Bosatsu Buddha - Bodhisattva of universal goodness, virtue, and worthiness - and represents the wisdom of the Nyorai. The Buddha on the right sits upon a Shi Shi lion with a sword in hand is the Monju Bosatsu - representing protection from evil spirits and the bringing of happiness and who in contrast symbolizes wisdom and the enlightened mind (realization). In Japanese, the Fugen and Monju Buddhas are often shown flanking the Historical Buddha (Shaka Nyorai) in a grouping called the Shaka Trinity with Fugen placed to the right of the central Shaka Nyorai Buddha statue and Monju situated on the left. In this triad, Fugen is often depicted holding a lotus flower and riding an elephant (to symbolize the great power of Buddhist practice in overcoming all obstacles). Monju is frequently depicted with a sword in one hand (to cut through ignorance), holding the Sutra of Wisdom in the other, and sitting atop a roaring Shi Shi lion. These two works came from a closed temple in Japan and likely date back to the late Meiji period / early Show period but could be older. Would clearly be the crown jewel of any Buddha or Asian / Japanese artifacts collection or a very eye-catching stand-alone accent pair of buddhas in about any setting. Dimensions together: 26" high, 28.5" wide, 7.5" deep. Each Buddha without pedestals and backing halos is roughly 12-12.5" tall.

A truly magnificent and special work - this beautiful and exceptionally long string of Japanese handcrafted natural wood (perhaps rosewood) Buddhist Juzu mala beads with four large square-like beads called shitenshu beads said to represent the Four Heavenly Kings: Jikko-Ten, Zocho-ten, Hiromoku-ten, and Tamon-ten (Since there are four square beads, the denomination is probably Tendai or Nichiren sect). These rosary-type prayer bead necklaces were used by Buddhist monks in temple prayers / rituals and worn by Samurai as amulets of protection. We have not come across another set of Juzu beads...

The Amitabha (Amida in Japanese) Buddha is shown standing with his hands forming the Amida raigo-in mudra. The face has a serene expression, with closed eyes under delicately arched brows and a severe face. The hair is arranged in rows of coils that also cover the "ushnisha", the protuberance on the head. The drapery is folded in elegant pleats falling from the shoulders to the feet. The antique sculpture is placed on a lotus flower which is located on a richly decorated base. Faith in Amida Buddha remained largely confined to a small segment of the Japanese population until the Kamakura Era (1185-1333) when it was popularized by new Pure Land sects committed to bringing Buddhism to the illiterate commoner. These sects expressed concern for the salvation of the ordinary person and stressed pure and simple faith over complicated rites and doctrines. Amida Nyorai...
