About the Item
Suzani, a Central Asian term for a specific type of needlework, is also the broader name for the hugely popular decorative pieces of textile that feature this needlework in vivid colors with bold, expressive floral and botanical designs, natural materials and superior craftsmanship. The fascinating fine silk embroideries from Uzbekistan are perfect examples of Suzanis.
Suzanis are embroidered with soft, glossy silk thread on hand-loomed narrow cotton panels, that are then sewn together to create a large surface. Their design, motifs and techniques vary depending on the region they come from. Chain, satin and buttonhole stitches are frequently used. The resulting look is a timeless one that delights the senses.
A wide range of Suzani-style embroidered textiles were traditionally made by Uzbek women to be used as wall hangings, bed covers, screens, wrapping cloths, table covers and prayer mats in their homes and their children’s future homes after marriage.
Today, a Suzani can be as versatile as you’d like it to be. With its soft, natural texture, it can be used and enjoyed in many ways as a wall hanging, bed cover, sofa spread, table cover, curtain and screen etc..It is a great decorative item that will bring a pop of color as well as a sense of elegance and sophistication to your home and can easily be blended with a variety of interior decor styles. - Antique Uzbek Suzani Embroidery Rug, c. 1800Located in San Francisco, CAAntique Uzbek Suzani Embroidery, c. 1800 Blending naturalism with ethereal fantasy, this spectacular embroidery or ‘suzani‘ from Central Asia conveys an aesthetic consistent with older examples of the genre. Certain features, most notably the vine-scroll, are reminiscent of the Samarkand school, while the drawing of the blossoms seems more prevalent in the repertoire of neighboring Shahrisabz. Indeed, this piece may in fact be a common ancestor to both. Splendid palmettes with flame-like tracery and bold swirling star-centered blossoms alternate within the border. Vegetal scroll meanders throughout—drawn with several shades of green conveying, if not a sense of shadowing, definite and deliberate tonalities of light and dark. The central hourglass form, idiosyncrasies of drawing, and arrangement of blossoms in the field imbue a sense of classicism rivaling and surpassing older Ottoman and Persian models.
