Chinese Silk Embroidered Panel of a Female Immortal, Qing Dynasty, 19th Century

About the Item

A large framed and glazed Chinese Qing dynasty silk embroidered tapestry panel of a female immortal, most likely Magu, late 19th century, China. The large Chinese silk panel beautifully embroidered with an image of the Taoist female immortal Magu. Magu wears luxurious, long, flowing robes, with scarf billowing around her and a gourd drinking vessel hanging tied around her waist. She holds aloft in one hand an archaic ritual wine vessel, called a jue, understood to contain the elixir of immortality. A horsehair fly whisk dangles elegantly from the elongated fingers of her other hand. At Magu's side is a graceful spotted deer, a sprig of lingzhi, the fungus of immortality, held gently in its mouth. Magu is considered an important immortal, or xian, in the Taoist pantheon. Originally a hemp goddess, she is now associated with longevity and the protection of women. Images of Magu were often gifted on the occasion of auspicious birthdays. The tapestry panel is exemplary for its workmanship, with fine and detailed stitching and overlays that give depth and texture, and simulates shading. The large embroidered panel glazed and framed in a mid 20th century fabric covered frame.
