Pair of Chased and Gilded Bronze Andirons from the 18th Century
About the Item
Pair of chased and gilded bronze andirons, each adorned with a putto girded with a drapery, seated on a moving base, carved with gadrooned foliage. One of the putti is holding a cup towards the second one who is holding a flower. Louis XV period.
The first andirons were found with the Romans thousands of years ago. They usually consisted of a single rod or block with one or two elevations. This allowed better air circulation to the wood and the fire stayed in its place. From the 16th century onwards, andirons were used in pairs, which considerably improved their function.
During the 16th and 17th centuries, the design of andirons was further adapted to the practical needs of cooking in and around the fireplace. In addition, the decorative andirons appeared, both in the kitchen and outside.
