Large Antique Architectural Trompe L'oeil Framed Ceiling Mural

About the Item

A monumental antique American architectural ceiling fresco art design decorative building element, framed in a later carved giltwood shadowbox style frame. The uniquely dimensional hand-painted art piece features a central trompe l'oeil skylight double eight point navigational compass rose, surrounded by written text of the Mark Twain. Bordered by angled out exterior piece with richly detailed polychrome paint decorated landscape and figural scenes depicting various steamboat events, with names, places and dates. Mark Twain (American, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, 1835-1910) steamboat career started when he received his steamboat pilot’s license in 1859. The great steamboat race of 1870 in Natches, Mississippi. Showboat 1875 New Orleans Louisiana, and more. Held behind a panel of clear plexiglass, set in a substantial thick square gilt picture frame decorated in relief carving ornamentation. Dimensions: (approx) Frame: 50" High, 50" Wide, 5.5" Deep Site: 43" High, 43" Wide Condition: Great shape overall, especially considering age. Displays wonderfully. Ready for immediate use. The work itself is in excellent original antique condition with nicely aged patina and minimal wear. The frame is in good shape, retaining original antique character marks, including some small scattered nicks, chips, losses, and other wear and tear consistent with age and indicative of use. Two strong metal loops are attached to the verso for easy wall hanging; frame is strong, sturdy and stands nicely so it can be simply placed on the floor against the wall as a decorative accent piece, above a fireplace as distinctive mantelpiece or over mantel, add to a coffered ceiling or remove from the frame and use as a authentic ceiling medallion.
