About the Item
Very decorative wooden architectural elements made in India around the year 1900.
These carriers, each 28 centimeters high, were part of a temple or other prominent building and are very
probably made in Kerala in southern India around 1900.
Two wooden supports in the form Gou Mata, the mother of all cows. She is a "cow of plenty" who gives her owner what
he longs and is often depicted as the mother of other livestock. In iconography,
she is generally depicted as a white cow with a woman's head and breasts, the
wings of a bird and the tail of a peacock or like a white cow with in her body
different deities. All cows are worshiped in Hinduism as the earthly
embodiment of the Kamadhenu. As such, Kamadhenu does not appear separately as a goddess
revered and no temples are dedicated to her.
