Iron Baluster with Grotesque, 19th Century

About the Item

Stair start. Molten iron, 19th century. Stair railing starting baluster made of iron formed by a polygonal vertical piece worked as if it were a column (base, pedestal below), which is interrupted to make room for the handrail and continues in a vase-shaped finish, and is it is decorated with grotesques (winged panther body, pearl mirror, vegetal elements) and scrolls on a square fretwork. Although the influence of classicism on some elements of the piece (scrolls, symmetry, etc.) is clear, it is also necessary to indicate a certain orientalizing air in other details. These types of pieces were highly appreciated for their decorative function in palaces and public or company buildings in the 19th century, hence the quality they show both in material and in technique and design.
