Pair of Monumental Rare and Important S.S. Ile de France Gates
About the Item
The Île de France, who's plans began in 1912 and was finally constructed after the close of WWI, was launched on March 14, 1926. She was the first ship to be completely designed and decorated in Art Deco and remained the most luxurious of the French ocean liners until the launch of the S.S. Normandie in 1935.
The Île de France had the longest run of the 3 liners. At the advent of WWII, the ship was docked in NYC for 5 months then commandeered by the British Navy as a supply ship for 5 years until her return to France in 1945. The ship then underwent major restoration and sailed again as a luxury cruiser until her sale to Japan in 1959 and ultimate demise by Hollywood explosion in the 1960 film, 'The Last Voyage'.
These are completely unique.
