18th Century French 'Pillars with IHS Monograms' Fireback / Backsplash
About the Item
18th century French Louis XIV fireback with two pillars, four IHS monograms and the date of production 1707. In the center is a coat of arms of a bishop or cardinal. The coat of arms has partly been truncated during the French revolution.
The monogram IHS stands for Iesus Hominum Salvator (Jesus the Savior of Humanity) or In Hoc Signo (In this sign will you win). The pillars refer to the club of Hercules and symbolize strength and the unknown.
The fireback is made of cast iron and has a natural brown patina. Upon request it can be made black / pewter. The condition is good, no cracks.
