Antique Japanese Hibachi/ Fire Box with Style Oribe, 1930s

About the Item

This Hibachi was made around 1930 in Showa era. It is made with ceramic and with Style Oribe. Hibachi is a brazier or fire box half-filled with burning charcoal. It is one of the traditional heating devices in Japan. The brazier as a fireplace appeared in the Nara period (710-794). Because it did not produce smoke like firewood, it was used by the upper class samurai and court nobles, but from the Edo period to the Meiji period, it became popular among the general public, and some developed as interior decoration. It can be used as a brazier but also as a decoration or a flower pot. Dimensions(cm): 30 × 30 × H 20.
