English 19th Century Painted Fireguard

About the Item

A wonderful painted English fireplace screen or guard, made there circa 1890. The design is intended to help keep coals, embers and sparks in the fireplace and clothing, pets and small children out. They are sometimes called nursery guards and allow all to enjoy the warmth of a wood burning fire from a safe distance. In warmer months, when the fireplace is not in use, a firescreen will add interest and obscure the empty fireplace from sight. This fireguard has its original green paint, which has acquired a lovely patination, and a polished nickel band that ornaments the top.
