Large French 'Pillars with Phrygian Cap' Fireback / Backsplash, 18th-19th C.

About the Item

18th-19th century French neoclassical fireback with two pillars of freedom topped with Phrygian caps. The fireback was produced during or just after the French Revolution in 1815. The Phrygian cap is the cap of Marianne, a national symbol of France. She symbolizes the 'Triumph of the Republic': freedom and reason. The pillars also symbolize freedom. The fireback is made of cast iron and has a natural brown patina. Upon request it can be made black / pewter. The fireback is in a good condition and does not have cracks.
