17th Century Monumental Chimneypiece Royal Red and Carera Marble

About the Item

Monumental chimneypieces as these are quite rare to find. The house owners which could afford a mantel like this often preserved it through many generations. This Baroque inspired piece comes from a Antwerp townhouse which was converted to a hotel. As the owner preferred a modern sleek interior we had the opportunity to buy and carefully dismantle it. The townhouse itself was rebuilt in the early 20th century on the fundaments of a 17th century house. During the drastic renovations every floor was redone in a historical style from medieval up to eclecticism. We took the mantel out of the Baroque room on the second floor. It is unsure if the mantel was allready in the house or if they salvaged it from another building. The 17th century inspiration clearly is present in style and materials used. Symmetric lines, strong mouldings, flower motives, putti and Classic Corinthian capitals are sculpted from royal red Belgian marble and white Italian Carrara. Two marbles which were omnipresent in famous 17th century buildings as Versailles. The general proportions and detailed craftsmanship emphasize the quality of this extraordinary mantel. Dimensions are 250 W x 350 H cm or 98.4 W x 137.8 H inches.
