18th Century Cast Iron Fireback
About the Item
A late 18th century cast iron fireback. The pillars with cross banded ribbons surmounted with liberty caps. These 'bonnet de la Libert ' were adopted during the French Revolution, so much so that on 20 June 1792, King Louis XVI was obliged to don a liberty cap by a crowd that had stormed the palace of Tuileries.
