Blue John and Statuary Marble English Georgian Mantle

About the Item

A magnificent antique statuary marble chimneypiece with semi-precious Blue-John and Sienna marble inlays. The statuary marble centre tablet has a large inlaid oval panel of 'Millers vein Blue John'. This is flanked by frieze panels, inlaid with richly coloured convent Sienna, in the form of geometric double Greek key patterns. Above the frieze panels are dentil mouldings which butt into the side of the centre tablet and create the bed mould for a cornice shelf which steps forward. The jambs comprising of tapering pilasters, inlaid with three flutes of beautifully coloured Blue-John, these under Sienna blocks overlaid with statuary paterea and mounted with swan neck capitals.  In the manner of English architect 'James Paine' Produced during the 19th century with some 18th century elements. Blue John (also known as Derbyshire Spar) is a semi-precious mineral, a rare form of fluorite with bands of a purple-blue or yellowish colour. In the UK it is found only at Blue John Cavern and Treak Cliff Cavern at Castleton in Derbyshire. During the 19th and 18th centuries it was mined for its ornamental value.
