Irish Georgian Kilkenny Fossil Mantelpiece

About the Item

Irish Georgian mantelpiece made from Kilkenny fossil marble. Dating from the late 18th century, in the neoclassical in style. The carved center plaque features a Tazza shaped urn with summer fruits and foliage. At either side of the plaque are fluted panels and carved floral corner blocks. The tall pilasters are also fluted. The Kilkenny fossil marble in this mantelpiece is of excellent quality, having many white fossils on a dark black background. It is very rare to find 18th century Kilkenny fossil mantelpieces, such as this one, with carved decorative plaques.
